Northern Lights explores the various faces of solitude and the consequences of loneliness in our times through five episodes and thirteen interconnected stories. Can love save us from loneliness? Or is love merely an illusion?
The five episodes portray different forms of vulnerability: families affected by economic migration, the sense of failure and stagnation in small towns, neglected and decaying spa resorts, the loneliness among teenagers in the digital age, and parent–child relationships shaped by political events, loss, and grief.
Like the northern lights — strange, luminous veils in the sky that many people search for, but not everyone gets to see — love is often unpredictable. It can rarely be forced, and sometimes it is difficult to hold on to. Yet when we experience it, it illuminates our path, if only for a short while.
The stories unfold largely between Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and the first days of the New Year, primarily in Romania, but also in other parts of Europe. The events take place in 2026 or in the years that follow.
