Ede Szigligeti’s romantic social comedy is a foundational classic, deeply rooted in the joyful tradition of Hungarianfolk drama, yet it also transcends this heritage by offering acheerful reflection on the dilemmas and challenges of contemporary theater. Written hastily during the turbulentperiod of the 1848–49 Hungarian War of Independence itsrelevance today lies in its universal celebration of freedomand carefree playfulness, standing in opposition to thethreats, hopelessness, and horrors brought about byongoing wars in the world.
The analogy between the atrocities of the War of Independence and the current horrors triggered byconflicts in the Middle East and Eastern Europe highlightsthe enduring significance of Szigligeti’s Lily Boy. The playoffers a way out towards love, general reconciliation, andthe promise of a better future, through the theatricalplayfulness of the stage and the escape it provides fromthe threats of everyday life.
